Whatever Gavin Newsome is selling, I’ll take ten

Kottke talked about an interview/talk Gavin Newsome, the mayor of San Francisco gave recently, where he offered the simplest, most elegant solution to making electric cars a more viable possibility:

Newsom talked about building filling stations for electric cars that relied on exchanging batteries instead of plugging in and waiting for your car to charge. You don’t need to own your particular battery.

Brilliant.  We already do this (propane tanks), so why not with cars?  This would even be a federal subsidy I could get behind.  Pay off the automanufacturer with the best battery technology to release it to the rest of the industry and allow them to collaborate on it.  There are tons of technical challenges, and it doesn’t solve the problem of electric vehicles having, at best, half the range of internal combustion vehicles.  But as it stands right now, this would be, by far, the best idea for solving one of the two major shortfalls of electric vehicles: that after exhausting the car’s stored energy, you can get all of it back in about 5 minutes.
